Bella Ramsey admits that she has a hard time maintaining her natural English accent after playing an American character in the post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us.
The 19-year-old actress has received universal acclaim for her starring role as Ellie in HBO’s adaptation of the award-winning video game, set twenty years later in a world still reeling from the ravages of a global pandemic.
But the American accent she adopted to play the young survivor while on set in the US has been hard to shake after her return to the UK.
Speaking to The One Show, Bristol-born Bella said: “I woke up speaking American…it happened last week, like I was living at home.
“I don’t know why it’s happening, I’m determined to stay British, but it’s hard when I’m around people with American accents. I find myself slipping back into an American accent quite easily.

The actress, who found fame as the outspoken young noblewoman Lyanna Mormont on Game Of Thrones, recently confirmed that she’s gender fluid, but admitted she’s not concerned with the use of specific pronouns.
“I guess my gender has always been very fluid,” she told the New York Times. “Someone would call me she or she and I wouldn’t think about it, but I knew if someone called me he it would be kind of exciting.”
The star said she checks off ‘non-binary’ if it’s an option on a form, before adding: ‘I’m very much just one person.
“Being gendered isn’t something I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
The Last Of Us is set 20 years after a pandemic wiped out most of the world, focusing on Ellie, who may be an integral part in curing the pandemic, and a smuggler named Joel, played by Pedro Pascal.

Bella stars as Ellie, a 14-year-old orphan struggling to know that she may have an important role to play in saving the world as she knows it.
The game is considered by many to be one of the best of all time, which led to the sequel, The Last Of Us Part II, released in June 2020.
The sequel sold over 4 million copies in its opening weekend, making it one of the best-selling PS4 games.
Before this new HBO series came to fruition, the game was in development as a film adaptation at Sony Pictures. It will be released on January 15.
